Les sacs plastiques interdits à Hawaï
Les sacs plastiques sont désormais persona non grata à Hawaï

L’État insulaire est devenu il y a quelques jours le premier des États-Unis à adopter une telle mesure.

Certains pays africains, l’Italie et la Corse, entre autres, avaient déjà proscrits les sacs plastiques non-biodégradables, lesquels mettent de très longues années à définitivement disparaître et sont de fait une véritable plaie pour l’environnement. Les autorités hawaïennes leur ont donc emboîté le pas après que le gouverneur du comté d’Honolulu, capitale de l’archipel, ait paraphé le texte et que le Conseil dudit comté l’ait approuvé.

L'État d'Hawaï est devenu le premier des états-Unis à interdire les sacs plastiques.

Une pollution majeure en moins

Une décision qui est en fait une « suite logique », les comtés de Maui et Kauai ayant préalablement montré la voie, et qui s’inscrit dans un contexte particulier, des milliers de déchets charriés par le tsunami qui a dévasté une partie de la côte orientale japonaise le 11 mars 2011 ayant déjà touché celles de l’archipel. L’afflux de rebuts ne devrait hélas pas s’arrêter de sitôt, aussi les pouvoirs publics hawaïens ont-ils été d’autant plus inspirés de ne pas – ou plus – vouloir ajouter une pollution évitable à une autre qui, elle, s’annonce très difficile à éradiquer.

La biodiversité marine locale n’a sans doute jamais été aussi menacée. D’où l’intérêt supplémentaire de cette disposition dont il faut espérer qu’elle fasse rapidement des émules à l’échelle planétaire…
