Notre surpoids équivaut à celui de 300 millions de personnes

L’augmentation de la population et par conséquent de l’alimentation est un véritable problème environnemental.

L’accroissement démographique devrait avoir de graves répercussions environnementales. En cause, une alimentation trop abondante pour les besoins humains, en tout cas dans les pays riches. Ajouté à celui de la surpopulation (rappelons que les experts prédisent 9,5 milliards d’êtres humains sur Terre à l’horizon 2050), le problème s’aggrave au détriment des forêts, dévastées au profit de l’agriculture et de l’élevage, lequel participe activement au réchauffement climatique de par les importants rejets carbone qu’il génère, et de nos océans, qui souffrent de la surpêche.

D’après les spécialistes, une répartition raisonnable et équitable des ressources de la planète pour tous les êtres vivants, humains ou non, suppose que l’Homme consomme toutes les ressources disponibles de façon mesurée afin de ne pas dérégler complètement l’écosystème. Une thèse dont la véracité vient d’être testée par une étude de chercheurs de la London High School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Ces derniers ont calculé la masse totale de la population à partir de l’indice de masse corporelle moyen et il apparaît que la population souffrant de surpoids et d’obésité, qui se trouve principalement dans les pays développés, demande une alimentation supérieure à la moyenne. Ils ont en outre révélé, et cette donnée est particulièrement intéressante, que si le cannibalisme revenait au goût du jour, nous aurions de quoi nourrir 300 millions de personnes en nous entre-dévorant (!)

Un problème de société qui devient un problème de protection de l’environnement

Ce constat déroutant est indissociable de multiples considérations écologiques. On l’a ainsi évoqué plus haut à plusieurs reprises dans ces colonnes : l’élevage d’animaux, qui ne cesse de prendre de l’ampleur, se traduit par une importante augmentation des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES). Parmi eux, le méthane (CH4), dégagé par les animaux eux-mêmes et qui est une vingtaine de fois plus puissant que le dioxyde de carbone (CO2), lequel est paradoxalement la cible numéro un des pouvoirs publics dans leur ensemble.

La progression de la culture des plantes fourragère destinées aux animaux entraîne elle aussi un accroissement des rejets, tandis que dans certains pays comme l’Indonésie, la déforestation a atteint des proportions dramatiques. Entre autres conséquences, celle-ci érode la biodiversité terrestre et favorise des coulées de boue parfois dévastatrices. Reste la surpêche, à laquelle aucun océan n’échappe, et qui résulte directement de l’augmentation de la demande mondiale en poissons. Des espèces sont aujourd’hui décimées ou en grande difficulté, ce qui perturbe tout l’écosystème.

Manger moins, uniquement ce qui est nécessaire pour notre survie, et accessoirement mieux résoudrait sans aucun doute bien des problèmes. Il en faut peu pour être heureux, disait la chanson…

Une alimentation raisonnée n'engendrerait pas ce genre de problèmes…
