L'avenir d'un « nucléaire écologique » est-il possible ?

Très peu médiatisé, le thorium pourrait régler un certain nombre de problèmes en attendant l’expansion des énergies renouvelables.

Un rapport du gouvernement anglais indique que le thorium n’est pas « la » solution au nucléaire.

À l’origine, le thorium servait principalement dans les alliages de magnésium utilisés entre autres pour les moteurs d’aéronefs. Dans les années 50 c’est un ingénieur français du nom d’Edgard Nazare qui découvre dans l’élément chimique un potentiel de combustible nucléaire, comme dans le plutonium et l’uranium. Déclaré plus sûr et disponible en large quantité dans la nature, sa réputation de « combustible nucléaire de demain » a pourtant été ébranlée par un récent rapport du gouvernement britannique.

Si les partisans du thorium déclarent que les déchets nucléaires engendrés par son utilisation sont moins toxiques et qu’ils ne peuvent pas être utilisés dans la fabrication d’une bombe, le rapport encourage néanmoins le Royaume-Uni à se tourner vers les nouvelles technologies, notamment en matière d’énergies renouvelables. « Le thorium présente des avantages théoriques en matière de durabilité, de réduction de la radiotoxicité et de réduction du risque de prolifération », indique le rapport, préparé par le Laboratoire national nucléaire (NNL) pour le ministère de l’Énergie et du changement climatique anglais. « Bien qu’il y ait une justification à ces avantages, ils sont souvent exagérés. »

Une solution viable par rapport à l’énergie durable ?

L’intérêt principal du thorium reste son cycle de combustion, qui ne devrait pas diminuer dans le futur. Le rapport conclut que s’il peut être judicieux pour le Royaume-Uni de maintenir un faible niveau d’engagement dans la recherche du cycle de combustible et du développement par la participation à des activités internationales, la mise à jour de certaines structures pourrait être coûteuse.

Bien que peu médiatisé, celui que certains appellent déjà « l’atome vert » crée le débat chez les écologistes. S’il est une alternative probable à l’uranium, il ne doit en aucun cas dispenser la création d’énergies vertes.
