La pêche au thon, un réel danger pour la biodiversité

À l'état sauvage, le thon rouge devrait disparaître d'ici 2050.

La surpêche du thon menace également plusieurs espèces.

Les méthodes de pêche en particulier sont pointées du doigt.

Les méthodes « destructrices » utilisées par les bateaux-usines pour la pêche du thon pourraient nuire à la biodiversité marine dans son ensemble. Alors que se tient cette semaine un sommet réunissant les principaux acteurs de la filière à Bangkok (Thaïlande), Greenpeace dénonce les ravages causés par la surpêche de cette espèce.

«C’est une situation d’urgence. Il y a tout simplement trop de bateaux [...] Une réduction importante est nécessaire si nous voulons inverser le déclin des stocks », a expliqué à nos confrères de l’AFP Sari Tolvanen, membre de l’association selon laquelle « on pourrait penser que l’industrie s’inquiéterait du déclin des stocks, mais il n’en est rien ».

Un laxisme contesté par les entreprises, qui assurent limiter les prises de poissons arrivés à maturité, et d’autant plus regrettable que le thon est une ressource essentielle pour certaines économies. Les institutions avancent donc sur un terrain miné en matière de sauvegarde de l’espèce, et satisfaire à la fois les industriels et les ONG de protection de l’environnement n’est pas une mince affaire.

Des nouvelles mesures devront être mises en place pour préserver l’écosystème.

Greenpeace assure néanmoins que les effectifs de thons pourraient réaugmenter pour peu que d’importantes dispositions soient prises à temps. L’association préconise notamment l’interdiction des systèmes qui attirent le thon vers les filets, lesquels engendrent aussi la capture d’autres espèces. Souvent victime des pièges tendus par les bateaux, dauphins, requins et autres tortues se retrouvent en effet régulièrement coincés.

Les spécialistes estiment qu’entre 1980 et 2007, 80 % des thonidés de l’Atlantique ont disparu. Le thon rouge, lui, pourrait s’éteindre à l’horizon 2050 à l’état sauvage. Son élevage suppose par ailleurs de réels sacrifices puisqu’il faut compter 15 kilos de poissons sauvages qui, une fois réduits en farine, ne nourrissent qu’un seul spécimen…

En 2010, la Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d’extinction (CITES) a refusé de voter l’interdiction pure et simple du commerce de l’espèce, la faute au lobbying forcené de certains pays, le Japon en tête. Deux ans après, le thon rouge, mais aussi ses « cousins », semblent bien mal en point.
